I’ve never read any Jane Austen before, although I have read a few of the retellings, so I have decided to take the plunge by participating in Jane Austen July on goodreads. It took some time and a lot of deliberating to decide exactly which Jane Austen novel I wanted to be my first, but I have chosen Persuasion. The prompts for Jane Austen July include one of the main six novels, a retelling, a novel by Jane Austen’s contemporary, a non-fiction book that somehow relates to Jane Austen, and watching a couple of movies inspired by Jane Austen’s works.
- Persuasion by Jane Austen. It took quite a bit of decision making to choose between Persuasion or Northanger Abbey which was the one I was originally leaning towards. I ended up deciding on Persuasion because it sounded like a good idea at the time.
- Persuading Austen by Brigid Coady. I thought it might be fun to read a retelling of Persuasion and Persuasion itself back to back. That hasn’t quite worked out as I planned, as I’ve ended up starting this one before Persuasion. I’ll be honest, I’m a few chapters in and so far all I feel is stressed by all of the characters.
- A Visitors Guide To Jane Austen’s England by Sue Wilkes. I’ve already started this book too. So far I’ve read the arriving in London chapter, as well as the one of choosing a place to stay. It is quite funny, and so far it isn’t too bad.
- The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler. I chose the movie version of this as one of my prompts, so I decided to read the book along with it. I have seen the movie a while ago, and I’ve heard the book is very different so I am curious to see how it all is.
