I’ve been binging some book tube lately while I’ve been busy unpacking and organizing the new apartment, and when I stumbled of the Historical Fiction Book Tag from ARRRGH! Schooling I definitely wanted to do it. I’ve been reading a lot of historical fiction the last few months.
What is your favourite time period to read about?
I really enjoy fiction set during WWII, particularly in London during the Blitz.
What book made you fall in love with historical fiction?
I think it was Dear Mrs Bird by AJ Pearce. It features Emmy Lake, an aspiring journalist, set against the backdrop of the London Blitz. Despite the war, Emmy is energetic and upbeat and I loved her to bits.
If you could write yourself into any historical fiction or visit any time period, what would it be?
Well probably not during the Blitz. I would probably choose something set in Tudor England, but I’m not sure exactly what that would look like.
Have you read a historical fiction novel that was so gripping it sent you on a research deep dive?
The Edelweiss Sisters by Kate Hewitt. It is set in Austria in the lead up, during and aftermath of WWII, and was an area I realized I knew very little about.
Do you have a favourite or auto-buy historical fiction author?
If I enjoy a book by any author, I tend to mentally put them on auto-buy. I’ve enjoyed both Dear Mrs Bird and Yours Cheerfully by AJ Pearce, so I will definitely be keeping an eye out for any future releases.
What is your favourite historical fiction movie or television show?
So many! Outlander, The Tudors, The Mill, The White Queen, The Spanish Princess. I tend to prefer TV shows to movies, as they can get more in depth.
Historical fiction is often overlooked or underhyped. What book would you recommend that would hook any reader on the genre?
I would probably say The Clockmaker’s Wife by Daisy Wood. It is set during the Blitz, but has huge element of mystery that needs to be solved. Unraveling secrets and mysteries was what had me hooked rather than the timeline.
Do you like historical fiction? Any historical fiction novels that you recommend? Any TV shows or movies I should check out? Let me know!
